Recently, I shared with all of you some of the nutritional changes my family is making, as well as the challenges and successes we’ve experienced. If you missed it, please read Part 1 and Part 2 of My Unhealthy Relationship.
Today, I’d like to put a local focus on this topic by providing a list of resources for parents in the Fort Collins area.
Because I want my children to eat healthy. I want each of them to have a positive body image and respect for their body. I want them to try new foods with an open mind. I want them to learn to cook and learn how the food they choose helps (or harms) their bodies. I want them to enjoy occasional treats without guilt or shame. And, I’m guessing every parent reading this feels the same way.
Now, how do we make it happen? Personally, I need some help. I need guidance, classes, resources, suggestions, support, and ideas. I’ve been seeking out the help I need, and today I’m sharing the information with you.
Please browse through this list. If you feel like something is missing, add it in the comments section below. I appreciate the suggestions and I’m sure other parents will as well!
A Fort Collins Guide to Healthy Food & Healthy Families
One of the biggest challenges for me is simply that I don’t enjoy cooking. It takes up too much time and makes a big mess in my kitchen. As we’re switching from processed foods to more real foods, cooking has become essential. It’s time for me to improve my skills and find joy in cooking.
For years, my recipe book was a 3-ring binder filled with crumpled papers, all of which featured scribbles, rips, and mysterious food stains. After a recent burst of motivation, my recipe book is now a finely organized and remarkably clean 3-ring binder:
Now it’s time to add some new recipes to our repertoire. A great resource for this is Andrea at Serving Up Fort Collins, a recipe blog that uses local Fort Collins ingredients. Andrea was kind enough to peruse her recipes and assemble some top picks for families. I requested healthy kid-friendly meals that are easy to make. Given those guidelines, here are Andrea’s picks:
Like many in Fort Collins, we like to eat out. We probably eat out for lunch or dinner an average of twice per week. Sometimes, we’re short on time and are looking for a quick meal or take-out. At other times, we’re in no hurry at all and just want to enjoy our evening. With the help of Kristin from Feasting Fort Collins, I’ve put together a short list of family-friendly restaurants that feature fresh, high quality, all natural, and local (when possible) ingredients.
